Pritzker Talks Affordability. His Tollway Wants Higher Tolls

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker has pivoted his reelection campaign to center himself as a champion of affordability. Yet the Illinois Tollway Board he appoints, and serves on, is preparing to vote on the largest passenger toll increase in state history as soon as Aug. 19.
The proposal would see passenger tolls rise by about 45 cents, or 57%, and commercial tolls rise by 30%. If approved, the hike would go into effect Jan. 1, and there would be automatic inflation-linked increases every two years, starting in 2029.
